THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY (1982). Peter Weir has made a lot of intelligent and underrated films, among them this drama starring Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver who meet in the steamy heat of Indonesia in the mid-1960s, when General Sukarno was about to be overthrown. Gibson is a journalist and Weaver is an Embassy official, and their romance is more grown up than the kind of stuff we have to put up with nowadays. The film is stolen by Linda Hunt playing an Indonesian dwarf, who is Gibson’s photographer.
