THE VIRGIN SPRING (1960). One of Bergman’s bleaker films, set in 14th century Sweden. A young girl and her sister are sent by their peasant parents to take candles to a church; one of them is raped and murdered by goat herders, who then ask for shelter from the parents. Revenge in the shape of Max von Sydow follows.
