A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT (2004). Immune to the charms of Amelie, I am unlikely to be keen on this extended story about a young French woman (Audrey Tatou again) who is determined to track down her fiance even though everyone says he died in the trenches. J-P Jeunet employs his familiar cinematic tactics of smart-arsery (a technical term), and we have the unusual sight of Jodie Foster being French, but there’s not a lot to recommend it, except to lovers of sentimental goo.
