VERA DRAKE (2004). Mike Leigh does his ‘working class people are better than middle class people thing’ in this story set in the 50s, revolving around Vera, a mother and housewife who does a bit of abortion on the side to help out young women in trouble. Much as I admired Imelda Staunton’s performance, and that of the rest of the cast, I found the film full of caricatures and very annoying.
