Ugly Truth, The

3/10

If by any chance it is a reference to the The Awful Truth (a sublime Cary Grant comedy), then that is the only witty element in the film. Katherine Heigl is a TV producer with falling ratings who is obliged to take on a sexist prat (Gerard Butler) who not only boosts the audience figures but offers to help her with her love life. See where this is going? Of course you do. It's the road most travelled in Hollywood romcoms. I am absolutely baffled by what Butler is doing in this kind of film. His comic timing is so far off, he makes Russell Crowe look like Cary Grant, and the plot is so laboriously unfunny, it's painful. If I tell you that at one point she goes to a restaurant wearing vibrating knickers, you can see how low this film goes.
