TOUCH OF EVIL (1958). It’s easy to write Orson Welles off as a one hit wonder, but although Citizen Kane will always dominate his CV, this thrilling film noir is a great success both for him as director, and in his supporting role as the gross and degenerate sheriff Hank Quinlan. Charlton Heston is an improbable Mexican cop honeymooning with Janet Leigh. The opening sequence is a masterpiece of construction (watch and you’ll understand).
