THE THIN RED LINE (1998). Several centuries after his previous film, cult director Terrence Malick showed up again with a typically beautiful, langourous and occasionally brilliant film set during WW2, and an attack on a Japanese outpost in the Pacific. Film stars are all over the place, but Sean Penn gives the defining performance.
