THE SEVENTH SEAL (1957). Another of the greatest films ever made. Ingmar Bergman has a reputation for being a Gloom Master, but his films have a dark humour and great tenderness for human beings. A knight and his squire come back from The Crusades and find the country in a state of near-collapse. This is the film where he plays chess with Death.
