THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES (2008). Sappy film based on a sappy book. The Americans can’t get enough of unhappy childhoods redeemed by later kindness, and this one delivers in spades. The heroine is cruelly treated by her dad and escapes with her adult friend/carer to a family in South Carolina where she learns how women can be empowered. Sorry for the sarcasm, but there must be better ways of making a point.
