SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998). There’s half a good film here; the beach landing at Normandy is virtuoso film making, and there are some other excellent scenes, including one where Tom Hanks defuses a potentially explosive situation. There are also periods where people talk too much, plot points that make no sense, and an inevitable bout of Spielberg sentimentality. Call it a draw.
