SALAAM BOMBAY! (1988). Long before Slumdog Millionaire, Mira Nair made this excellent slum-based movie about life in Mumbai, without any of the romance or magic. It’s a terrific film, only bettered by Monsoon Wedding, and it’s only a pity that Nair has succumbed to making bland Hollywood pap like Amelia. The story is an everyday one of a boy who is trying to earn enough money to pay back his brother, but who cannot ever save because of the world he’s stuck in.
