ROBIN HOOD (1939/1973/1991). The story that will go on being filmed (and televised) for as long as people make films. And why not? It’s a great story and all the better for having no historical basis in fact. The first one is the best – Errol Flynn as the man in green (though the film teems with every other colour imaginable). The whole film is a perfect combination of action, comedy, drama and romance; a complete film without a flaw. I guarantee you will love it. The Disney film is so so, made during a period when Disney films were mainly rubbish. As for Kevin Costner’s effort, well, we can enjoy Alan Rickman’s scenery chewing performance; Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is the most beautiful Maid Marian yet, and it does have Morgan Freeman. But in general, it is the purest Hollywood 90s muck. And then there’s Russell Crowe to come.
