LA REGLE DU JEU (1939). Jean Renoir is one of the half dozen greatest film directors who ever lived. This – along with La Grande Illusion – stand as his finest achievements. Set in the period between the two world wars, it is, on the surface, a country house comedy drama, but look deeper and you will see that he is mirroring the fracture of society along class lines, and in the process anticipating what is to come. It’s also extremely entertaining.
