REGENERATION (1997). One of the best war/anti-war films. Based on the first book in Pat Barker’s trilogy, it combines real characters with fictional ones. Jonathan Pryce plays an Army psychiatrist trying to heal the profound psychic wounds inflicted by trench warfare in WW1; James Wilby is a fine Siegfried Sassoon whose refusal to support a war he disagrees with has led to him being treated as a head case; he also finds time to mentor Wilfrid Owen. The main fictional character is Jonny Lee Miller as Billy Prior, an officer from a working class background who has been traumatised by the war.
