REBECCA (1940). Hitchcock does Daphne du Maurier in his first Hollywood film, a gothic horror drama. Joan Fontaine marries Laurence Olivier but in the eyes of the housekeeper she is an inadequate substitute for the previous Mrs de Winter. It’s hammy as hell, but great fun.
