THE READER (2008). It’s so easy to make cheap jibes about Kate Winsless/Winalot, so why should I resist? I’m actually a fan of hers, but this bid for Oscar glory is so close to the gag that she and Ricky Gervais shared in Extras that you can’t help but laugh. It’s an awkward film, shuttling clumsily between past and present. Ralph Fiennes tries to make sense of his teenage affair with a bus conductor ((Kate W), but most of the film follows the affair itself and the aftermath.
