THE QUIET AMERICAN (2002). Despite the presence of Michael Caine, this is not at all a bad adaptation of Graham Greene's novel set in Vietnam in the early 1950s (there was another filmed version in 1958). Caine plays a British journalist living contentedly with his beautiful young Vietnamese mistress when he meets a naive but idealistic American (Brendan Fraser), who becomes infatuated with Phuong (Caine's girlfriend).

Although Caine and Fraser become good friends, Caine is not sure that Fraser is as simple minded and innocent as he appears to be. And also, he would prefer not to have Phuong taken away from him.

The film is well made, and shows that when he chooses to, Brendan Fraser is a fine actor.
