PULP FICTION (1994). While as a rule I reckon that Quentin Tarantino is hugely overrated (and currently a busted flush), I make an exception for this film, which is exceptional. Made up of three stories that eventually interconnect, it is funny, violent, scary and witty, full of dazzling little tricks that feel clever rather than showing off, and with a cast that does full justice to the subtlety of the script. It was all downhill after this.
