THE PROPOSITION (2005). Australian director John Hillcoat’s western (set in 19th century Oz) is pretty special, with a strong feel for the ambiguities of life and the potential for both cruelty and kindness. Guy Pearce has to hunt his outlaw brother down in order to save another brother. Ray Winstone plays the policeman trying to bring order to a lawless outback. Very good.
