Peeping Tom

6/10

PEEPING TOM (1960). The film that finished off the career of Michael Powell. Back in the pre-Beatles, pre-Lady Chatterly days, British society was not ready for Powell’s blend of violence and voyeurism, and the response of the critics was more than enough to keep audiences away – even if cinemas had been willing to show it. The film is still disturbing, suggesting that we are somehow implicit in the killer’s brutality, by way of our observing the events.
