ON THE WATERFRONT (1954). When you look at the bloated hulk that Marlon Brando became in later years, not to mention his half-hearted and hammy acting, it’s hard to believe that he was once a great actor with a sensuous beauty. This Oscar-winning drama has always been controversial because of director Elia Kazan’s attack on communism in front of HUAC but nothing can detract from the emotional powerhouse of Brando;s performance, wonderfully supported by Rod Steiger, Eva Marie Saint and Karl Malden.
