NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977). Even a dedicated Scorsese fan like me has trouble with a very long film which stars Liza Minnelli and features big musical numbers. The film lost loads of money, but this may be less to do with the fact that the public didn’t appreciate a masterpiece and more to do with the fact that the public didn’t want to see Liza and de Niro making mediocre music in between implausible romance.
