THE NEW WORLD (2005). I’m not quite sure why so many people are convinced that Terrence Malick is a genius, based on such flimsy evidence. True, he’s speeded up his film making from once every 25 years, but judging by this slow-paced and confusing account of Captain John Smith and Pocahontas at the dawn of European America, he hasn’t really got a grip of how to engage an audience. Beautiful, yes, exciting? – wake me up when it’s over.
