MAGNOLIA (1999). Paul Thomas Anderson makes some of the most interesting and unusual films around. After the success of Boogie Nights, he dived into a three hour multi-layered story that includes Tom Cruise as a messianic bigot (he’s never been better), Philip Seymour Hoffman as a nurse, and a host of other excellent actors. And then there’s the frogs. You’ll understand when you see it.
