Last Song, The

6/10

As I sat down to watch this film, I made a deliberate decision to only look for the positives, and ignore any unkind thoughts. And it wasn't a problem.

Here is a list of things I liked about this film.

  • Miley Cyrus - she was feisty, likeable and a credible heroine
  • Greg Kinnear (as her dad). Not much of a role, but he made the most of it.
  • Liam Hemsworth as her hunky, rich, too-nice-to-live, rich and adorable boyfriend
  • Bobby Coleman as the annoying but endearing younger brother
  • I liked the bland and forgettable indie soundtrack
  • I got caught up in the Mills and Boon cheesiness of the plot, and was really moved by it
  • I thought it was a well made and engrossing film

Now obviously this is not a film made for my age or gender, but allowing for that, I thought it was as good as you're going to get. Compare and contrast with the tedious Dear John (from the same author, Nicholas Sparks). The Last Song has people you can like, a plot which ticks all the right boxes, and is highly recommended to anyone who likes their schmaltz laid on with a toothpick rather than atrowel.

None of the above is ironic.
