THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST (1988). This has never been regarded as one of Scorsese’s great movies but I hold it in high regard. First of all, the music (by Peter Gabriel) is sensational, as is the setting (North Africa standing in for the Middle East). The theology may be patchy, but Willem Dafoe, despite his unJesus-like looks, carries so much passion and energy that he is magnetic, and the feeling in the film is strong enough to keep you engaged for well over 2 hours.
