THE LAST EMPEROR (1987). Despite its hatful of Oscars, I found this Bertolucci film long, slow and dull. Set in the early years of the 20th Century, as the Chinese Empire ground to a halt, its central character is a man simultaneously powerful and powerless – the last emperor.
