6/10
A Romanian peasant woman is cast out by her husband and community when they discover that her son is not his son. She takes the 10 year old in a horse drawn cart and sets off to find the men who raped her (and fathered the child). It's an improbable subject and setting for a first film by a British director from Reading, but the end result is surprisingly effective. Although the story is contemporary, we soon realise that very little has changed in this world for decades; wrongdoing must be punished, revenge is personal. The setting is stunning, the acting excellent, and the outcome probably not what you expect.
