KING OF COMEDY (1983). Martin Scorsese’s darkest and most misanthropic film. Rupert Pupkin (Robert de Niro) is a fruitcake loser/loner who wants to get close to Jerry Langford, a talk show host. But the only way he can manage it is by kidnapping him, with the assistance of Sandra Bernhard who is even more barking. Anticipating the cult of celebrity and the weird world of the stalker, this is not an easy film to love, but it is superbly made.
