Jerry Maguire

6/10

JERRY MAGUIRE (1996). There haven't been many good Tom Cruise films, so all the more reason to celebrate this film, which is thoroughly enjoyable. TC stars as a sports agent, who has an epiphany (or moment of blinding clarity) as a result of which he writes a memo, suggesting greater honesty and openness in his business. Everyone loves it and he's fired. Starting from scratch is tough, with only plucky single mum Renee Zellwegger to help him, and one lone client. But this is Hollywood, so you know it won't be all bad. The film manages to be funny, romantic and pithy, which are rare enough attributes to deserve a celebration - a small one, anyway.
