JUDE (1996). Hardy has rarely made great cinema, but Michael Winterbottom does a fine job with his most depressing novel. Christopher Eccleston plays the eponymous hero, defeated by the unfairness of life, and a young Kate Winslet is Sue Bridehead, the love of his life.
