Jean de Florette

JEAN DE FLORETTE (1986). Along with Manon Des Sources, this is one of the most successful French films of all time, based on a popular novel which in turn was inspired by a film. Gerard Depardieu plays an idealistic man who comes to Provence shortly after the First World War to develop the property he has bought. A local farmer and his nephew pretend to befriend him, but conspire to destroy his dreams. The countryside looks beautiful, and if anyone wants the easy way in to watching foreign movies, they could do a lot worse.
