HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO (1944). Preston Sturges is one of those Hollywood film directors from the past who’s constantly being cited as ‘overlooked’, but nothing changes. A bunch of marines give their medals to a guy who’s been working in a yard while telling his mother he’s at war. He comes home to a hero’s reception and it is suggested he runs for mayor on the back of his (non) exploits. What’s a guy to do?
