HAROLD AND MAUDE (1971). I have never been that smitten with this film whose cult status has lasted a long time. Maybe it’s the Cat Stevens soundtrack, maybe it’s the sentimentality pretending to be black comedy; and the story – very young boy and very old woman have love affair based on a mutual fascination with death – is pretty creepy. I admire the intentions with which it was made (and it certainly wouldn’t get made nowadays), but I can’t honestly recommend it.
