Hamlet

HAMLET. There are a lot of Hamlets to choose from. Kenneth Branagh’s (1996) is the most thorough (the whole text is used), and is pretty good. Olivier’s (1948) version is a little mannered, but is worth watching for Olivier’s performance. I can’t recommend the Mel Gibson version (1990) since it seems to think it’s a revenge movie, and Hamlet was not Mad Max. There’s a Russian version (1964) which is slow and smouldering, and a modern day version (2000) with Ethan Hawke which is ambitious but unsatisfying.
