GALLIPOLI (1981). Set in 1915, this is Peter Weir’s account of the tragic cock up inflicted on the Australian and New Zealand armies (among others) by a political decision to invade Turkey by sea, which turned into a military disaster. Mel Gibson is one of the young men whose lives were sacrificed for this pointless exercise.
