GREAT EXPECTATIONS (1946). Very few good films have been made of Dickens’s novels, but this is one. David Lean kept the pace right, chose the right actors and created an atmosphere that suits the purposes of the story. You should of course read the book, but the film is in its own way equally enjoyable.
