THE GODFATHER 1 - 3 (1972/74/90). The first 2 films are among the best movies ever made. The 3rd is no more than adequate and can best be ignored. I could go on all night about why these films are so good, but first of all just watch them, and then you tell me. A few things – the acting is uniformly superb; Brando, Pacino, de Niro (in Part 2), Caan, Keaton and so on and so forth. There are a number of set pieces that have never been bettered – the assassinations intercut with the christening for example. And – something that it’s easy to overlook – it acts perfectly as an allegory for 20th Century America.
