GET SHORTY (1995). A little gem of a film; it’s commercial, witty, funny, smart, unpredictable, and even a little tough – and the cast is to die for. Based on one of Elmore Leonard’s many minor masterpieces, the film’s biggest coup is to make John Travolta look good as Chili (hot yet cool, geddit?) Palmer, the guy who can sort out trouble. Plus Rene Russo looking fabulous, Gene Hackman as a sleazeball film producer, and a lot of other really good actors. There’s nothing here not to like.
