GERTRUD (1964). Carl Theodor Dreyer is a Danish film director who is acclaimed by critics as one of the greatest of all time (you are most likely to have heard of his Passion of Joan of Arc); but to the wider world he is an unknown. This is as good a place to start as any, with a film about a woman who aspires to independence but finds it tough to achieve. Dreyer’s style and sensibility are unique.
