GANDHI (1982). Not so much a film, more a song of praise, but not necessarily the worse for that. Richard Attenborough spent years getting this film made, and while it does have a certain ponderous quality, as if it wants to be a David Lean movie but hasn’t got the legs, it does also have the extraordinary good luck/judgement to have Ben Kingsley in the title role. It’s hard to imagine anyone else bringing a tenth as much brilliance to the part.
