FAT CITY (1972). Back in 1972 when Jeff Bridges was just starting out on his career, he played a promising young boxer called Ernie Munger in one of John Huston's best films. Fat City has always had a strong reputation, without the profile that has accompanied better known films from the 70s like Dog Day Afternoon. But it's well worth tracking down.
Stacey Keach co stars with Bridges as a washed up older boxer who discovers Ernie and encourages him to make the most of his talent - something he hasn't been able to do for himself. Women and drink have always been his undoing.
It's an unglamorous film but one of the best of its kind.
