Wes Anderson's animated film of Roald Dahl's story is as quirky and idiosyncratic as you'd expect. Which explains some of the resentful criticism from people who found it too Americanised. They've missed the point - it's been Andersonised. I enjoyed it. True, it differs in tone and plot from the book, but so what? The stop motion animation (moving figures a micromillimeter at a time) makes a pleasant change, and George Clooney has never been smugger as Mr Fox, supported by silky-smooth Meryl Streep as the missus, and other assorted Anderson acolytes like Bill Murray and Willem Dafoe. Not especially suitable for very young kids, but there's a lot here for most ages to enjoy, if they approach it with an open mind.
