LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS (1945). When people ask me what my favourite film is, I tell them this is. Made in 1944/5, while the Germans still occupied Paris, it harks back 100 years and is set in the Parisian equivalent of Shaftesbury Avenue – theatreland. There are several characters around the film is based, all of them intriguing and unusual. The film’s heart is romantic, which is why I like it, and although it’s three hours long, subtitled and in black and white – not to mention old – I genuinely think that anybody with half a soul would love it.
