THE ELEPHANT MAN (1980). The most un-Lynch like film that David Lynch has made, although there are touches of surrealism visible in this black and white costume drama set in Victorian times. John Hurt plays Merrick, a man afflicted with the most grotesque physical appearance which has doomed to him to a life as a freak show. Anthony Hopkins is the benevolent doctor who rescues him and helps him find some dignity. It’s a very beautiful film.
