A bright new star is born. Her name is Carey Mulligan and if she doesn't light up screens all over the world for the next few decades, I shall be very surprised.
She stars as a smart teenager living in suburban London in 1961, with her mind set on Oxford. When a smooth talking thirty something cruises past her in his car, she's swept away, as are - more crucially - her parents, who fall for his patter. Yet the film is not a morality tale any more than it is a romance. It is what it says in the title, an education in the ways of the world. I liked it very much indeed.
