DO THE RIGHT THING (1989). Spike Lee’s output has been patchy, but this is one of his best films, set in a steaming hot New York suburb where racial tensions are high. Lee himself plays a delivery boy for a pizza parlour run by Danny Aiello, and his sons, one of whom – John Turturro – is a hothead. The film has a pulse of energy and confrontation, and as well as it making a political point, it’s also a lot of fun to watch.
