Dog Day Afternoon

7/10

DOG DAY AFTERNOON (1975). In that pantheon of great 70s movies we’re supposed to admire (but don’t), this is one that is still as good as it ever was, and probably better. Al Pacino is on top form as a petty criminal who tries to rob a bank to help his boyfriend pay for a sex change operation, but it all goes wrong and we’re in a hostage situation. The standoff goes on for hours and there appears to be no way out. Films like this don’t get made any more – too much moral ambivalence, not enough god and bad guys. It’s a film you should see.
