Dead Man

5/10

DEAD MAN (1995). Jim Jarmusch only makes films one way, and it’s not a commercial way. Minimalist, slow, deadpan, you can choose your adjectives. Before superstardom, Johnn Depp plays a meek accountant called William Blake who heads west for a job which no longer exists. Pursued by bounty hunters he is befriended by a native american called Nobody, who thinks JD is a reincarnation of the poet. It’s not a film that will make you laugh, cry or feel excited. I’m not even sure it’s a very good film, but there’s a strong cast, a soundtrack by Neil Young, and a certain fasination at seeing what a director does when he has no worries about appealing to an audience.
