DAYS OF HEAVEN (1978). The second film from Terrence ‘No Rush’ Malick. Richard Gere stars as a young man, who, along with his girlfriend, Brooke Adams, (pretending to be his sister), and her (real) sister, heads West in 1916 to escape from a murder rap. They go to work for Sam Shephard who falls for Adams, and a scheme is hatched for her to marry him so that when he dies (he’s unwell), Gere and Adams will get all his money. It’s beautifully photographed, took forever to make, and was originally due to star John Travolta. Worth watching as an archetypal 70s movie which falls somewhere between self-indulgent and masterpiece.
